The ‘rule of law’ is supposed to apply to everyone regardless of rank or position in society. Not so in Australia. As an Australian Broadcasting Corporation journalist said recently:
“Freedom is an obscure concept. None of us are ever truly free. And for good reason. Our lives are governed informally by social norms and by formal rules, regulations and laws that, if broken, result in sometimes harsh penalties.
Politicians often are loud and proud about their commitment to “law and order”, to stamp out crime, except when it comes to finance and business.”
